In this episode…

The adage that a business’s success is 95% process and 5% people is a truism. However, scaling to nine figures depends on systems, teams, and product development.

Amazon selling expert Jamie Davidson shares that his brand rapidly grew to an eight-figure business. But when he committed to expanding to nine figures, Jamie recognized that he needed to adjust his systems and processes. He advises that as you build your business, you can conduct time studies to assess where you’re exhausting your time and identify time-consuming activities. Once you analyze your time study, work to reduce activity times, prioritize duties, and automate or delegate tasks. Additionally, you should focus on product development by creating new products and staying up-to-date on emerging industry trends. Lastly, Jamie recommends focusing on profit margin and inventory management. Understanding your net helps to determine your ability to reinvest in new products.

In this episode of the eComm Breakthrough Podcast, Josh Hadley interviews Jamie Davidson, Co-founder and Coach at AMZ Insiders, about effective strategies to grow your Amazon business more efficiently. Jamie reflects on his journey to becoming a nine-figure brand. He also discusses building a productive e-commerce team and scaling operations, why product development is integral to business growth, and systems for scaling to nine figures.

Jamie Davidson 2:52

Hey, Josh. Appreciate it. Yeah, great to be here.

Josh Hadley 2:54

Jamie hitting that nine-figure mark. That’s a pretty big deal. You know, we talked about you know, going from seven to eight figures and beyond on this podcast, and you’re the guy who’s gone way beyond right, you’ve hit that nine figures. I’m curious, why don’t you tell us a little bit more about that journey of getting to nine figures and maybe some high level lessons learned?

Jamie Davidson 3:16

Yeah, so you know, everything is, you know, a numbers a number, but that kind of the strategies or the approach can be applied, whether you’re looking to go from, you know, trying to get to nine figures, or a lot of people, you know, or let’s say maybe low seven figures, and trying to get to eight figures. And that might be the toughest part through it. So I can share a little bit about but a lot of the lessons are very similar. In our case, back in 2012-2013, or early days, we’re beginning we’re selling in the cell phone, accessory space. So cell phone cases, actually, originally iPad cases was kind of our really big thing. And there was a early opportunity. So there was a good window of opportunity with my, my next door neighbor at the time, I was accepted executive for a private equity backed company. And so it was like, oh, what’s the side hustle that we’re doing? He’s doing out of the garage. And then I quickly realized, like, Oh, this is like garage is like filling up with a lot of stuff. And it’s taken off from there. So without going into all those details at the beginning, but essentially, we had a business that got to it was a little different back then where we got to $10 million. We basically got to eight figures within a very short period of time, like within two years. But if you want to talk to like, kind of fast forwarding, and then I’m sure we may dive back to some of that stuff. But at this point, as the team grew out here in Atlanta, Georgia with warehouse and we had about 20 employees, the time, essentially the business kind of stagnated at a few different levels. At about kind of the $40 million mark, we were stagnated for a while. We actually did a small acquisition that helped get us to 20 million. And then we got to kind of like the 50 to $60 million mark and we kind of stood there for about a three year period, which again Mace is like, hey, it’s a lot of money, but Of course, it depends on your margins and how much you’re where the business is. Or if you have issues or lawsuits or whatever the case may be. So your margins were different by a year. But essentially, to get to that next level, we had to make a change. But so yeah, we basically implemented a bunch. So I’m happy to go into some of it as you think is relevant. But we basically made a strategic change to go from that plateau we’re at to then within about three years later, to break the nine figure mark down.

Josh Hadley 5:24

That’s amazing. And I know before we hit the record button on this podcast, we talked about, you know, some of those strategies of what helped you kind of get to that nine figures. And really, it just in general, not even just nine figures itself, but helping scale brands from wherever you’re at, to get to that next level, from six to seven, from seven to eight, right? It’s all about kind of the systems and the processes that you’re able to implement. And there’s different systems that you’ll implement at different times in your business. But Jamie, let’s talk about that. Let’s talk about what were some of those changes in I think the systems really, that you applied into your business to where you were stagnating around 50 million to then explode, to cross that 100 million dollar mark?
