Finding the Balance in a Relationship When Your Spouse Is Your Business Partner

Josh Hadley & BeccaJosh Hadley is the CEO of Hadley Designs, and Becca Hadley is the Chief Creative Officer of Hadley Designs, an online boutique graphic design store. The boutique specializes in stationery and gift items ranging from wedding invitations to baby shower decor to classroom decor. A one-off opportunity for Becca to design wedding invitations for her best friend sparked something in Josh, and from there, Hadley Designs was born.  The e-commerce leaders are more than just business partners. They are also the powerhouse couple behind the brand.

Though Hadley Designs is an eight-figure success, Josh and Becca’s trajectory once laid elsewhere. Josh’s path was always to be an entrepreneur. He holds an MBA from the University of Utah and has always had an innate passion for owning a business. Becca, an art lover since childhood, is also a University of Utah alum with a BA in education.

It’s rare that a couple can combine their passions to create a business venture. But that happened for Becca and Josh Hadley, the dynamic duo behind the creative e-commerce brand Hadley Designs.

Still, working with a significant other can be challenging: how to divide time to spend with the kids, setting aside alone time, and respecting each other’s job role in the company. So, how can a married couple who spends nearly 24 hours together make it work?

In this episode of Josh Hadley’s eComm Breakthrough Podcast, the script has been flipped, as Chad Franzen of Rise25 interviews Josh, CEO of Hadley Designs, and his wife, Becca Hadley, Chief Creative Officer of Hadley Designs. Together, this powerhouse couple discusses following your passion, understanding the right time to pursue entrepreneurship full-time, and finding the balance when working with a spouse.

I started Hadley Designs in 2015 and grew it to an eight-figure brand in seven years.

I made mistakes along the way that made the path to eight figures longer. At times I doubted whether our business could even survive and become a real brand. I wish I would have had a guide to help me grow faster and avoid the stumbling blocks.

Chad Franzen 2:22

Hey, thanks so much, Josh. Great to be here with both of you. Hey, Becca, welcome. This is the first time we’ve met you. We’ve heard Josh’s story about how Hadley Designs has grown. Why don’t you tell us your story and how you got to where you are. Yeah, so

Becca Hadley 2:35

Growing up as a kid, I always loved art. I love creating and designing. And I knew it was something where hours and hours would pass and it would feel like minutes to me. So I knew it was something that I loved. But as I went on to study and and went to college and different things, everyone was like, Oh, don’t get an art degree, you won’t make any money and all those things. I was like, okay, so I went on to study education, which was fun. But once we graduated, we moved to Dallas, Texas,

Josh Hadley 2:58

I think you also skip the fact that like when you were little, you didn’t just like art, like you were incredibly gifted at art, like, tell people like what were some of the awards that you won and like participated in?

Becca Hadley 3:11

Yeah, I want different greeting card contests. I did a Christmas card that then was printed across the US, which is really cool. When I was thinking I was like eight or nine, and just various like school art contests and City Art contests. So it was really fun. So I did enter a lot of things. And I did win a few things. And it was awesome. And I loved it. And so when I moved to Dallas, I was looking for a job. And Josh was fortunate enough to have a great job. So he was like, oh, you know, go, go explore, do whatever you want to do. And so I started designing everything I could I started learning everything that I could about Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop because these weren’t things that I studied in school. And so I self taught myself everything that I know, to this day. And I started off doing Oh, countless free Christmas cards. And that moved on to wedding invitations for my friends who are getting married. And I loved it. And it was from there with the wedding invitations that Josh and I were like, oh, maybe there’s something here with this. And so we ended up starting to grow the wedding invitation side of our business. I was doing custom bride or custom invitations for brides he’s doing like two to three brides a day. It was so busy. Really fun. And that’s kind of what started how the designs from the get go. Was that one thing impatient business so

Chad Franzen 4:21

Wow, very awesome. So you said you got an education degree?

Becca Hadley 4:24

Yeah, early education in psychology. Yeah.

Chad Franzen 4:27

Did you? Did you ever try to even look for a job in that field?

Becca Hadley 4:30

Like maybe for like a day and then I was like, Oh, I just don’t want to like watch other people’s kids. So no, but I will say I have used a lot of my knowledge with my own children. But no, I never got I mean I I did during college but afterwards No. So
