Hi, Josh Hadley, here, host of the eComm Breakthrough Podcast, where I interview the top business leaders in e-commerce. I started Hadley Designs in 2015, and I grew it to an eight-figure brand in seven years. But I made a lot of mistakes along the way that made that path to getting to eight figures take a lot longer than it could have been. At times I even doubted myself whether I could run the business, or if the business could become a real brand one day. I wish I would have had a guide to help me grow faster and avoid a lot of those stumbling blocks that I hit along the way. If you’ve hit a plateau in your business, and you want to know the next steps to take your business to the next level, then go to eCommBreakthrough.com. That’s e-comm with two M’s to learn more. And as a special bonus to my podcast listeners, I’m giving away one $10,000 comprehensive business strategy audit session, at no cost. All you need to do is email me at Josh@eCommBreakthrough.com. And if you don’t win at this time, don’t worry, because you’ll be entered for future and ongoing months when I do those strategy audits. I have Chad, Franzen in here of Rise25, who has done hundreds of interviews with successful entrepreneurs and CEOs. We have flipped the script, and he’s going to be interviewing me today. Welcome, Chad.

Chad Franzen 2:12

Hey, Josh, thanks. It’s great to be here. Today, I would love to talk about your approach to enhancing the performance of a business and your years as a business leader. What kind of framework have you developed where you can just step in and kind of implement ways to enhance the performance of a business pretty quickly?

Josh Hadley 2:28

Yeah, that’s a great question, Chad. And I feel like I’ve got a decade of experience here in terms of running, leading, and managing different businesses. You know, while I was finishing up college, I actually served as the co-chairman of the Utah Entrepreneur Challenge, one of the nation’s largest student-run business plan competitions. So I did that for two years, which was a fantastic opportunity for me to really look under the hood of a lot of entrepreneurship businesses, and understand what’s working, what’s not working there, along with leading that entire organization that actually put on those that competition and challenges for those students. Then I moved into my career and started at American Airlines, where I was a part of their MBA Leadership Development Program. And that was exceptional experience, being able to see how a large corporation operates, what are the things? What are the things that they do? How do they make the strategies and the decisions that they make when it affects so many customers at the same time? And then also, you know, as the CEO of Hadley Designs, for the last seven years, we’ve gone from literally zero to, you know, crossing that eight-figure mark and $10 million-plus in revenue. So I’ve got a lot of experience in watching things grow from nothing to grow into something bigger. And hopefully, we continue to scale that. But what I feel like I’ve been able to do is I’ve been able to develop a framework that I call my four core areas of performance enhancement. And those four core areas of performance enhancement are number one, product innovation; number two, people; number three, sales and marketing; and number four, operations. So Chad, where do you think we should begin here?

Chad Franzen 4:17

Why don’t, well, you know, we could start with number one. Hey, before we get to number one, though, product innovation, tell me how have these kind of evolved? Like, did you just wake up one morning and think, you know, I’ve got four core areas of performance enhancement. How did they kind of evolve? Did you have six, seven, and then realize that these were the four most important?

Josh Hadley 4:36

Yeah, that’s a great question. So how did we, you know, narrow it down to these four? So really, it’s been an evolution over the last few years, I think, as our own business has continued to grow and scale and I needed to build out a leadership team. I needed to, myself, write down to what I felt were the biggest drivers, needle movers, biggest levers that I can pull inside the business. And so it forced me to kind of like, narrow it down to like, there’s a million different things that I could be working on with inside the business, right? I could be working on just HR in and of itself, I could be working on marketing, social media, I can be working on, you know, accounting, finance, there’s the list goes on and on and on, right. So what I decided to do is just create like four areas, where if we focus on these four areas within our business, and we make strategic decisions, this should be able to make an impact if we pull this particular lever. So that’s how I kind of identified these. And I have specific examples here that I’ll share with you that that walk through kind of why I decided like, this is a core area of the business rather than, you know, maybe accounting, for example, and finance, although important, you know, these are the four core things that I can move into a business, make changes, and then be able to see growth happen real quick. Does that make sense?

Chad Franzen 6:06

Yeah, absolutely. So the first one that you listed of the four was product innovation. Tell me a little bit more about, you know, obviously, it’s very important, but tell me a little bit more about your thoughts on it.
