In this episode…
Amazon sellers use PPC data to determine their cost of advertising. Inflated data leads to overspending and wasting away profits. So how can you avoid sabotaging your advertising campaigns?
Business leader and PPC guru Ritu Java of PPC Ninja recommends these three strategies: Devise a PPC budget, caution sponsored display ads, and perform periodic audits. Regarding a PPC budget, Ritu warns against allowances based on your competitors’ TACoS. Instead, she suggests using a formula to determine costs. Besides being expensive, sponsored display ads can be ineffective since it targets audiences with specific interests, and may fail to generate sales. Audits ensure your PPC data is accurate, identify potential issues, track campaign performances, and provide you peace of mind that you’re in compliance with Amazon’s policies.

Ritu Java 3:27
Josh, thank you so much for having me. I am super excited to be here. And to talk all about PPC today.
Josh Hadley 3:35
Well, Ritu, I’m super excited to have you on the show because I know that you were actually voted as the Best Speaker at the most recent virtual Billion Dollar Seller Summit. So congratulations are in order to you for winning that award because you shared some amazing content there. Yeah.
Ritu Java 3:56
Thank you so much. I appreciate it. Yeah, I was kind of blown away. I never expected it. But I guess it is what it is. I’m super happy and grateful for, for all the votes and for being voted the best speaker, thank you so much.
Josh Hadley 4:11
Yes, well, again, congratulations. And again, for those of you who don’t know what the Billion Dollar Seller Summit is, in the event hosted by Kevin King, in my opinion, this is one of the best conferences and events that you can go to, it’s always a limited in the number of sellers. So it’s capped, I think around 100 or so. And the content that they share, Kevin, in reaching maybe you could add to this like Kevin kind of forces you to say you can’t take anything else that you’ve presented elsewhere and kind of reshare it here. Is that true?
Ritu Java 4:46
Exactly. Yeah. The you know, Kevin’s at a really high bar. And you know, we all want to please have like you know, he’s the the you know, the greatest mind out there when it comes to have content and amazing hacks. And I think because of that, the quality is really, really good. And, you know, no one repeats anything that’s been shared on other podcasts and, you know, blogs or any other medium. So yeah, it’s really high quality content.
Josh Hadley 5:18
Yeah, a great, good, good shout out for the Billion Dollar Seller Summit. So now, Ritu, let’s talk about your journey. I mean, you started as an Etsy seller, and you’ve kind of ended up in this PPC experts space. So walk us through, you know, you’re passionate about data science. And obviously, there’s a lot when it comes to data science with the amount of data that we’re getting from Amazon, with advertising. Tell us how did you decide to get into advertising? And why did you decide to niche down specifically there?
Ritu Java 5:51
Yeah, so I realized, you know, as an Etsy seller, that it isn’t enough just to have a listing, and people won’t even notice that you put up a listing, and it’s just gonna sit there at the bottom of a very large pile of, you know, all kinds of products, and why would anyone even find you so, you know, when I launched my, my jewelry brand on at the over 10 years ago, now, it was that struggle, you know, I was like, Oh, I’m not getting any views. Nobody’s noticing me. So I started doing all kinds of things like participate in collections. And, you know, just, you know, joining forces with other Etsy sellers, so that we could get like mood boards out and, you know, doing Pinterest and driving traffic to my Etsy page, and nothing seemed to be moving the needle, you know, and then I got into Facebook advertising. And then I started my own blog, because I wanted to support the content, then I started a YouTube channel, I started showing people how to make jewelry. So everything that I could do in terms of like, sending high quality traffic, I was doing, but I wasn’t seeing any results. Because, you know, the winners were taking all the market share, and they were like, way ahead of me, I’m like, we’re How do I get into the space? You know, how do I, how are people making so much money on at the end, I’m not even being noticed, you know, so that was my problem faced and I wanted to solve it desperately, you know, so I just took in so many courses. At that time, I remember, I took courses and Facebook advertising, you know, following all the major gurus that Amy Porterfield and, you know, gosh, I don’t remember names anymore. But so many people in the space that were sharing free content, good content, you know, and I was like, gosh, I’m so grateful, there’s podcasts, and people are actually, you know, willing to share their knowledge. And, of course, they were at the end, you know, invited to like a paid course and stuff, which is understandable. But I learned a lot from there. And, you know, by background, I’m an engineer, and I like to solve problems I want, I want to figure out the formula for success, you know, that’s generally been my kind of guiding principle. So I decided to go back to school. And so I was like, Okay, I’m gonna take courses in data science. So I took a bunch of courses, you know, including programming, you know, like, Python and SQL, and I went back to school in the United States. Well, at the time, when I started my store, I was living in Japan, I lived there for 17 years, by the way. And it was a great time. But then I was ready for you know, like, real work. So I went to the Seattle, Washington to, to do a year long course in data science. And then that’s kind of what changed the trajectory of my life. Because right after that, I was, you know, given an opportunity to work as part of an e-commerce brand. I was, you know, hired to be the Marketing Manager for, you know, tools, right, software tools for Amazon Sellers. So I kind of got in the space was very lucky for that break, and was immediately attracted to PPC, you know, immediately that was the thing that was exciting for me, because I knew that I had had a similar experience of wanting to make my, my product be seen and chosen, you know. And so that started my journey really into PPC. And fast forward to today, what, six years since that moment, I am now in Canada, I live in Canada. I’ve been here for five years. And I’m the CEO of BBC ninja, so we have software and services, and I really enjoy it. I’ve really enjoyed every moment of this journey. And more and more, just feel that this is where I want to be where this is where I light up. I love data. I love playing with data and I just love all the tools that Amazon is sharing these days with search query performance and new brand analytics, and just a lot of stuff. So excited to be here.
Josh Hadley 10:08
Yeah, well, Amazon is certainly pumping out more data than they ever have before. So having somebody like yourself as a data scientist to be able to talk to, that understands how to sift through large amounts of data and actually draw conclusive, you know, parallels to why things are happening, the way they are in your account can be super valuable. So, Ritu, there’s so much that we could dive into the first thing that I want to kind of ask you, though, knowing that our audience is primarily established sellers that are have already crossed that seven figure mark, why do you think Amazon advertising is so important for them in order to help scale their business to eight figures and beyond?
